You've booked your flights and hotel, and you've organised your travel insurance. Finding the right place to board your pet while you're away also takes planning. Kerriann Campbell, Executive Manager of Animal Operations at the RSPCA South Australia, says pet owners should look for a range of features when choosing a place for their pet to stay. "If you are considering a particular facility, drop in to see the place. If they don't take you for a tour without an appointment you may question why," Ca mpbell says. "Do they have exercise yards and qualified staff, will your pet have 24/7 access to fresh water, a warm bed and adequate shelter, and does the person showing you around seem informed about the animals in their care?" Home away from home says. "Ensure you have necessities too: food, treats, bowls, their bed and leads and collars with identification. Of course, your pet should also be desexed, microchipped and vaccinated." Say goodbye to your pet as you would on a routine day, such as when leaving for work. "Making a big fuss can cause high anxiety and stress when you leave. Wish them a fun stay, offer them a treat and tell them you'll see them soon," she says. Finally, Campbell advises, "When you pick them up your pet is going to be excited but wait until you get home for those hugs and cuddles -- it will make your car ride home less stressful! "Keep in mind that some pets don't sleep well away from home so give them time to readjust back to their routine and plenty of space to relax." Look at the cleanliness and whether there are food and water bowls, toys and blankets in each pen. Ask whether the facility is super vised round the clock, how often your pet will be fed and given fresh water, if there is a fire alarm system and whether aggressive guests are isolated. For peace of mind, find out how your pet will be protected from fellow boarders. Safety blanket Prepare your pet for their break by packing something that smells like home in their travel bag, perhaps an old jumper or T-shirt, she suggests. "Familiar smells like their bed from home, their own toys and familiar food will help them partly maintain their routine while they are away," Campbell Going on holiday often means finding a temporary home for the family pet.
