HCF Fit and Well : HCF Fit and Well Summer 2015-16
H ave you ever wound up in a hotel room facing a brick wall, where you couldn’t see what you were doing without the light on? We used to rely on travel agents to use their networks and partnerships to get us the best deals and coordinate our accommodation bookings. Fast forward to 2015 and you’re more likely to search the internet for your own place to stay, according to your personal needs and taste. Apps such as TripAdvisor are great for accessing genuine user ratings of destinations, accommodation and services. Our mobile devices have put the power into our own hands and given us the ability to search for and compare fight deals, book accommodation, organise activities, learn how to ask for directions in Spanish and even change our travel plans last minute – all with the swipe or tap of a fnger. Research tells us that more than a third of the world’s travellers say they use their smartphones more when they travel than they do at home. With more and more companies developing apps and creating mobile-friendly websites, a case can defnitely be made for curating a holiday on the go. Last minute accommodation deals can be found on apps such as Hotel Tonight or the very popular Airbnb, while AroundMe and Zomato can fulfl every entertainment and culinary whim, based on your location. The same applies in the case of emergencies. Our smartphones can provide instant access to hospitals, doctors or the local embassy if you fnd yourself in serious trouble. Becoming ill or injured overseas brings a whole set of challenges but those with a newer iPhone model may be aware of the Apple Health app which allows you to create a personalised Medical ID. Here you can upload information about allergies, medical conditions, medication you’re currently taking and your blood type, as well as the details of your nominated emergency contacts. Better yet, this lifesaving information can all be accessed by anyone, even if your phone requires a passcode.
